THE TALK: Lifestyle Approaches for Healthy Aging: The Importance of Stress and Recovery

Abstract

Anton’s research interests focus on the influence of  lifestyle factors on healthy aging and chronic disease conditions including obesity, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic syndrome. He completed his doctoral degree in Clinical and Health Psychology at the University of Florida, receiving training in health promotion and the delivery of lifestyle interventions designed to modify eating and exercise behaviors. Following completion of his post-doctoral fellowship at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in June 2007, he accepted a joint Assistant Professor position within the Department of Aging and Geriatric Research and Department of Clinical and Health Psychology at UF. Anton is currently a Professor within the Department of Physiology and Aging at UF. With over 150 published scientific articles in top medical journals, his research has been recognized both nationally as well as internationally. He is an expert on intermittent fasting and exercise and has published extensively in these areas as they relate to healthy aging and metabolic health (e.g., Flipping the Metabolic Switch: Understanding and Applying the Health Benefits of Fasting; Fasting or caloric restriction for healthy aging; Practicality of intermittent fasting in humans and its effect on oxidative stress and genes related to aging and metabolism; Optimizing the benefits of exercise on physical function in older adults). He has written several book chapters for prestigious academic books including the Handbook of Obesity Treatment: Clinical Applications, the Oxford Textbook of Geriatric Medicine, and most recently Present Knowledge in Nutrition, 11th Edition. In 2018, he co-authored the book, The Man Diet, a science- based guide to optimizing health and vitality for men.

Biography

Since completing his doctoral degree in the field of Clinical and Health Psychology at the University of Florida, Dr. Anton has received numerous prestigious awards for his research. Most notably, he was awarded a UF Term Professorship in 2017, a distinction given to top professors at the University of Florida.
