Bridges by Scott Weeks, Florida Engineering Society (FES)
January 11, 2020
January Science Saturday was about “Bridges”. The presentation was led by civil engineer Scott Weeks and his colleagues from the Forest Chapter of the Florida Engineering Society (FES). Students designed bridges, first using paper and tissues boxes and then with straws and string. In designing their bridges, students had to follow a set of design rules - they then tested their bridges by seeing how many pennies each bridge could support. The results of their tests were used to improve their bridges. We appreciate the volunteers from FES (each of whom had been involved in the design of at least one real bridge) and the participation of high-school student volunteers from Forest, North Marion, and Vanguard High Schools.
