Dolphins- Brainiacs of the Sea by Dr. Verity Mathis, Florida Museum of Natural History

March Science Saturday was a hands-on science event presented by the Florida Museum of Natural History. Dr. Verity Mathis, the Mammal Collections Manager at the museum, led activities about determining mammal intelligence from the ratio of cranial volume to body mass. The Silver River Museum in Ocala lent us a variety of mammal skulls, and Dr. Mathis brought a dolphin skull from the museum collection. We conducted experiments that let us conclude that dolphins are truly brainiacs among mammals, both on land and in the sea.
