Secret Codes by Dr. Arash Mahyari, IHMC

February 8, 2025

The February Saturdays topic was “Secret Codes,” presented by Arash Mahyari, Research Scientist. Students learned about the field of cryptography, and encrypted and decrypted secret messages using codes of increasing complexity. Third- and fourth-graders performed hands-on activities related to mirror writing, the substitution cypher, and the book cypher. Students in grades five, six, and seven learned about the Caesar Cipher and the Enigma Cipher, and they also learned how both of these codes were eventually broken.
